Acid Reflux

Do you suffer from heartburn? Do you have a burning sensation in your stomach, acidic reflux into your mouth, or pain in your chest that feels like a heart attach? Time to reach for an antacid on other acid reducer medication, right? Maybe not. Low stomach acid know as hypochlorhydria, is actually a more common cause of heartburn than high acid. Really! Low stomach acid can cause stomach contents to ferment. With incomplete signals, the food can't get the message to "move on". When it can't move on, it can reflux into the esophagus.

The heartburn symptoms are similar for both, but the effect of low acid on the body is much worse. When you don't break down the food properly, you aren't able to absorb the nutrients you need, so you become deficient of many essential vitamins and minerals leading to numerous health issues such as osteoporosis. You also become more susceptible, to overgrowth of harmful bacteria such as H Pylori that causes ulcers, and to developing multiple food allergies. And worse of all, you can be causing these symptoms by chronically taking acid reducers. But if you have been on an acid reducer for a long time, please do not discontinue abruptly. You need to get on a good digestive enzyme product, such as Nutriplenish GI before beginning to taper off Acid blocker. To learn more about Hypochlorhydria, whether you have high or low acid, and how to treat, come see us at Canadian Valley Pharmacy.
